headed out for my first Bao Bei experience with Dave whom i met through neighbour cait. a chef away from home for long periods of time, his time off is packed with plans for good times. a few weeks back we went to The Diamond for dinner and drinks and then to Mamie Taylor's for dessert. last week, we hit up the new Matchstick Cafe, Bao Bei and then down the street to Keefer Bar.

first up was the eggplant, but we devoured them too quickly for a photo.
i think i will actually attempt to recreate the eggplant. it was incredible.
the eggplant and brussels are top contenders for my next visit with kevin.
Steamed Prawn and Chive Dumplings
wok charred, watercress, compressed green daikon, apple,
pickled Sichuan peppercorns, shaved jalapeño, tobiko, basil seed vinaigrette
they changed this one up slightly. no apple, but they had an amazing addition of fresh gnocchi that melted in your mouth. so many flavours and textures. so different and so amazing.
steamed buns with pork belly, bean sprouts, preserved turnip, sugared peanuts
there is a good chance that i will also attempt to tackle these at some point this year. i know it would take me a good 10 tries to get remotely close, but it would be worth it. considering pork buns have been a favourite part of my life since i was a child, i would be 100% into recreating what is essentially homemade Chinese-style mini slider burgers.

i had starved myself all day. my eyes were bigger than my stomach and we added this guy to the list. another childhood favourite is the texture of chewy rice cake and having a whole plate with mushrooms and bamboo shoots was really took the… cake! had had har. definitely have to invite my brother along for the next visit. we used to always order "chubby" noodles when hanging out at my dad's work which had a very similar texture. and if James is coming, we're probably going to order the
